If you plan to give an oral or poster presentation at any session or symposium at the 15th International Congress of Speleology (ICS), you must submit your abstract by 1 December 2008. The reason for this early date is because unlike many conventions that only publish abstracts, the ICS publishes short papers of your work (maximum of 6 pages, including maps, figures, photos, and tables). All abstracts are reviewed by a committee to insure the content is appropriate (must be on any topic of speleology: science, exploration, management, etc.) and of probable broad interest. Authors will be notified by the end of the year if their abstracts are accepted, and then authors will expand their abstracts into papers that are due by 1 February 2009. Reviewing and revising all papers for accuracy must be completed by 7 April 2009 to allow time to layout and print the material for distribution at the ICS.
The ICS proceedings are always highly valuable documents that record the state-of-the-art in speleology and are used for many years after each ICS. I know some people are intimidated by the international nature of the ICS and assume their work is not interesting or good enough. Don’t assume that. Share your results with the world. All abstracts will be submitted to one of the two addresses listed on the ICS website. The Review Committee will sort the papers appropriately by session. If you are sending your paper for a particular symposium, please indicate that. If you do not get a message within 1 week saying your abstract was received, send it to the other address, the ICS secretary, or me. Sometimes internet security beyond our control prevents messages from reaching some addresses but not others.
